This is one of James’ shorter novels, and has an engrossing plot: will the idle opportunist get the rich heiress, or will her father disinherit her to make the gold digger vanish? It’s very nineteenth century in its language, customs, and manners. I enjoyed this book a great deal, even though there weren’t many surprises. Well, perhaps there was one surprise—the character of Catherine the heiress. A good read!
