Short Stories

Anything Is Possible by Elizabeth Strout

Like her previous work “Olive Kitteridge,” this book is a combination of a short story collection and a novel: all of the chapters/stories are free-standing, independent, without making specific references to other places in the book, but they all revolve the same characters in a small Illinois town who flow in and out of each other’s lives. In fact, one of the characters — Lucy Barton — is the title character in another novel. The stories are warm and gentle, but there are sharp rocks in the babbling brook that will take you by surprise. It is a book I will read again.
