The Lake Effect by Erin McCahan

Everything is better at the beach, right? Briggs has just graduated from high school, he’s got his future all planned from a full-ride scholarship, to a double-degree (law/MBA), and then he’ll make a lot of money! In the meantime, he’ll be spending summer at the beach as caretaker/companion for an elderly widow. Briggs thinks he has it made but life has some important lessons for him. I thoroughly enjoyed this often funny, sometimes poignant novel. A perfect beach read – definitely a successful cross-over novel for YA and above!

  1. Me, too. In fact, I really struggled at first with the main character’s “likeability” but then I realized that was part of the author’s plan! It turned out to be a really solid “coming-of-age” story.
