The Book of Essie by Meghan MacLean Weir

While not being currently promoted strictly as a “teen read,” this book features teen protagonists and heroes who overcome huge, life-altering challenges. This book has definite cross-over appeal and I predict a movie version in the near future. Essie is now 17 and has spent her entire life on TV as part of large and hugely successful Christian family whose daily lives have been fodder for their reality TV show. But now, Essie is pregnant and she struggles to handle the facts of her situation and how this will impact her family and her future. I found the book to be a little uneven, a little too “talky,” and the characters a little too lightly rendered. But the story line was riveting with many parallels to current real-life tragedies and events. Very much recommended.
